Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, University of Tehran – Overview and History
The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Tehran originated in 2010 with the establishment of the Aerospace Engineering Department within the Faculty of Advanced Sciences and Technologies. Dr. Mohammad Hossein Sabour served as the department's first head. The department began its operations alongside divisions focused on New Energies and Environment, Life Science Engineering, and Interdisciplinary Technologies. Over time, it expanded to include specializations in Aerodynamics, Aerospace Structures, Flight Dynamics and Control, Propulsion, Space Engineering, and Satellite Technology. In 2013, the addition of the Satellite Technology specialization completed the faculty's aerospace curriculum, and the first cohort of PhD students was admitted that same year. In September 2023, the Aerospace Department was elevated to the status of a full-fledged Faculty of Aerospace Engineering.
Currently, the Faculty comprises three primary academic departments—Aerospace Structures, Aerospace Systems, and Aero-propulsion—under which six specialized aerospace tracks are organized at the Master’s and PhD levels. With a faculty of 20 members, specialized laboratories, and a talented student body, the Faculty offers educational programs that integrate scientific and practical skills to cultivate creative, expert professionals.
The Faculty’s research areas and industry engagement encompass the design and analysis of aerospace structures, aerodynamics and flight dynamics, composite materials and smart structures, satellite technology and space systems, control and navigation, and specialized aerospace testing. These capabilities are leveraged through collaborations with the aerospace, space, and advanced technology sectors. The primary mission of the Faculty is interdisciplinary education and research at the intersection of aerospace and other fields—an approach aligned with the inherently interdisciplinary nature of this domain and the requirements of the aerospace industry. In this context, the Faculty’s development plan includes the establishment of new specializations tailored to the needs and mission of the College of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Technologies.
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Tehran is ranked in the 201–250 range globally in the field of Mechanical Engineering—a category that encompasses Aerospace Engineering. As part of this institution, the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering continues its educational and research activities, striving—through the dedicated efforts of its faculty members, researchers, and students—to contribute to the Iran’s scientific excellence and to emerge as a leading scientific hub in the region.
